Understanding U.S. Diesel Prices
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) divides the country into five Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts (PADDs), each with its own diesel price dynamics:
- Gulf Coast (PADD 3) — typically the cheapest, home to 50%+ of U.S. refining capacity
- Midwest (PADD 2) — moderate prices, seasonal demand from agriculture
- Rocky Mountain (PADD 4) — limited supply, prices can spike in winter
- East Coast (PADD 1) — dense population and heating oil competition drive prices higher
- West Coast (PADD 5) — highest prices due to strict environmental regulations and isolation from Gulf Coast supply
Why Track Diesel Prices?
- Fleet operators — adjust fuel surcharges and budgets based on regional trends
- Truckers — plan routes through cheaper fuel regions
- Travelers — estimate diesel trip costs for airport and long-distance travel
- Consumers — understand how diesel prices affect the cost of shipped goods
